Hop Fastpass®, or Hop for short, is our electronic fare system that lets you ride TriMet, C-TRAN and Portland Streetcar. You pay by “tapping” the green Hop reader once when you board, using a phone with a mobile wallet, contactless credit/debit card, plastic Hop card, virtual Hop card or paper Hop ticket. We also accept cash on buses and at MAX ticket machines.
Buses and streetcars have Hop readers inside the door. At MAX and WES stations, the Hop readers are located on the boarding platform (and you pay before boarding).
You only need to tap when you board (not when you get off), but remember to tap every time you board a bus or train — including when you transfer — because your tap is your proof of payment. (You won’t be charged unless you tap again after 2½ hours, but you still need to tap to validate your fare.)
We designed Hop to give you options and make paying your fare easy. That means you can pretty much use whatever’s in your pocket:
- Credit/debit card in your phone’s mobile wallet: We accept Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Tap your phone on the Hop reader as you board to pay the $2.80 Adult fare. Recommended if you don’t need to use reduced Honored Citizen or Youth fares, and you prefer to use your phone for payment.
- Contactless credit/debit card: We accept any bankcard (Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express) showing the contactless symbol. Tap your card on the Hop reader as you board to pay the $2.80 Adult fare. Recommended if you don’t need to use reduced Honored Citizen or Youth fares.
- Reloadable plastic Hop card: With a Hop card, you have access to reduced fares for seniors, youth, people with disabilities, people who qualify based on income, veterans and active-duty military. Tap your card on the Hop reader as you board. Recommended if you want to use reduced Honored Citizen or Youth fares.
- Virtual Hop card in your phone’s mobile wallet: With a virtual Hop card, you have access to reduced fares for seniors, youth, people with disabilities, people who qualify based on income, veterans and active-duty military. Tap your phone on the Hop reader as you board. Recommended if you want to use reduced Honored Citizen or Youth fares, and you prefer to use your phone for payment.
- Paper Hop ticket from a ticket machine at a MAX or WES station: Ticket machines at MAX stations accept credit/debit cards or cash. You can buy a ticket valid for either 2½ hours or all day. Tap your ticket on the Hop reader before you board.
