Hop Fastpass®, or Hop for short, is our electronic fare system that lets you ride TriMet, C-TRAN and Portland Streetcar.
You pay by “tapping” the green Hop reader once when you board, using a phone with a mobile wallet, contactless credit/debit card, plastic Hop card, virtual Hop card or paper Hop ticket. (We also accept cash on buses.) Buses and streetcars have Hop readers inside the door. At MAX and WES stations, the Hop readers are located on the boarding platform (and you pay before boarding).
You only need to tap when you board (not when you get off), but remember to tap every time you board a bus or train — including when you transfer — because your tap is your proof of payment.
You don’t need a Hop card to ride the bus or train. You can tap your phone on the Hop reader to instantly pay the Adult fare using a credit/debit card in your mobile wallet — no Hop card or app needed. And, you will earn both Day and Month passes as you ride — just like Hop cardholders do.
However, in order to use our reduced fares, you’ll need to get a Hop card or virtual Hop card.
Here’s how Hop works: When you first tap, you’re charged the 2½-hour fare and you can board any combination of buses and trains to complete your trip within that time. (Remember to tap every time you board.) If you tap again after 2½ hours, you’ll be charged for another trip, but you’ll also automatically earn a Day Pass — which means you can ride for free for the rest of the day until 3 a.m. Once you’ve paid $100 (Adult) or $28 (Honored Citizen and Youth) in a calendar month, the rest of your rides are free that month.
