You don’t need a Hop card to ride TriMet — you can simply tap the green Hop reader as you board with your phone or contactless credit/debit card to instantly pay the $2.80 Adult fare.
But if you want to use reduced fares for seniors, youth, people with disabilities, people who qualify based on income, veterans and active-duty military, you’ll need to get a Hop card:
- Get a reloadable plastic Hop card at the grocery store. Cards cost $3 and you can choose from Adult (18-64), Honored Citizen (65+ or Medicare) or Youth (7-17, high school/GED). Honored Citizen and Youth fares are reduced fares (half the price of Adult fares), so proof of eligibility is required when boarding. Register and load money on your card at myhopcard.com or load money on your card at the grocery store.
- Tap your card on the green Hop reader as you board. The screen will show a confirmation that you paid your fare and you will hear an audible chime. You’re good to go!
Your fare is valid for 2½ hours, during which time you can board any combination of buses, MAX, WES or Portland Streetcar to complete your trip. Remember to tap the Hop reader every time you board a bus or train (including when you transfer), as your tap is your proof of payment.
