If the members of your group wish to pay separately, they can use a Hop ticket, plastic Hop card, virtual Hop card, contactless credit/debit card or their phone’s mobile wallet using Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay. (We also accept cash on buses.) But if you’re a tour guide or group leader, you may want to pay for multiple riders all at once or coordinate payment methods. You have several options:
- Option 1: Buy paper Hop tickets for each rider from the Hop ticket machine at any MAX station. Have each rider tap their ticket on the Hop reader as they board. You can buy a ticket valid for either 2½ hours or all day. Recommended if this is an impromptu trip or you do not expect to travel more than once with this group.
- Option 2: Get a reloadable plastic Hop card ($3) from the grocery store for each rider. The minimum load is $5, which covers an Adult round trip with unlimited travel until 3 a.m. Have each rider tap their card on the Hop reader as they board. Recommended if you expect to travel more than once with this group or the group members intend to ride again in the future.
- Option 3: Add virtual Hop cards ($3) for each rider to your phone’s mobile wallet using the Hop app. The minimum load is $5, which covers an Adult round trip with unlimited travel until 3 a.m. As you board, tap your phone on the Hop reader once for each rider, using their respective Hop card in your mobile wallet. (You will be tapping once for each rider, but using a different Hop card each time. Hop readers don’t accept repeated taps from the same card.) Recommended if you expect to travel frequently with this group and/or you want to simplify boarding for the group members by paying the group’s fare all at once.
- Option 4: Add virtual Hop cards ($3) to each rider’s mobile wallet on their phone. The minimum load is $5, which covers an Adult round trip with unlimited travel until 3 a.m. Have each rider tap their phone on the Hop reader as they board. Recommended if group members have phones with mobile wallets, and you expect to travel more than once with this group or the group members intend to ride again in the future.
- Option 5: Get a TriMet Class Pass if your group has 15 or more youth (such as a school field trip) and wish to ride TriMet buses and trains. To make sure there is room on board for your group, and to receive the reduced Class Pass fare of $1 round trip per rider, you must schedule and pre-pay at least two weeks in advance of your trip. Required for large groups and school field trips consisting of 15 or more riders.
